1950 Fields Medalists

After a 14-year hiatus due to World War II, the International Congress of Mathematicians reconvened in 1950 at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The 1950 medals were awarded to two extraordinary thinkers who revolutionized analysis and number theory.


3. Laurent Schwartz (France)

French mathematician Laurent Schwartz was awarded the Fields Medal for developing the theory of distributions, a monumental breakthrough in mathematical analysis. Before Schwartz, physicists like Paul Dirac used mathematical objects (such as the Dirac delta function) that made practical sense in quantum mechanics but lacked rigorous mathematical foundation. Schwartz created a unified, formal framework that extended the concept of functions to "generalized functions" or distributions. His work reconciled physics with rigorous mathematics and fundamentally transformed modern partial differential equations, Fourier analysis, and quantum field theory.



4. Atle Selberg 

Norwegian mathematician Atle Selberg earned his medal for his groundbreaking work in analytic number theory, particularly regarding the distribution of prime numbers. Selberg stunned the mathematical community by providing an "elementary" proof of the Prime Number Theorem—a fundamental result that describes how primes are distributed among the integers—without using complex function theory. Beyond this landmark achievement, he developed the Selberg trace formula and the Selberg sieve, tools that became essential cornerstones for modern spectral theory, automorphic forms, and the Langlands program.
