Klaus Roth (United Kingdom)

Klaus Roth became the first British mathematician to win the Fields Medal, recognized for solving a famous, longstanding problem in number theory known as the Thue–Siegel problem. Roth established what is now called Roth's Theorem, which provides an optimal upper bound on how closely algebraic numbers can be approximated by rational numbers (fractions). This groundbreaking result in Diophantine approximation resolved questions that had stumped mathematicians for over half a century and earned him international acclaim for his remarkable technical precision.



René Thom (France)

French mathematician René Thom was awarded the medal for inventing the theory of cobordism in differential topology. Thom introduced a powerful geometric concept to classify smooth manifolds by determining whether two manifolds together form the boundary of a higher-dimensional manifold. His work completely transformed topology by turning abstract geometric classification problems into computable algebraic structures. Thom’s techniques laid the foundation for modern differential topology, and he later gained widespread fame for pioneering catastrophe theory to model sudden shifts in physical systems.
